History of Block Panchayat

Kothamangalam Block Panchayat is a major local self-government institution located on the eastern border of Ernakulam district in Kerala. The region known as the “Gateway to the High Ranges” has a rich historical and cultural heritage. In ancient times, this area lay along the major trade route connecting Muziris and Madurai, making it an important center for trade and the exchange of spices and forest resources. Before India’s independence, the region was part of the Travancore kingdom. Large-scale migration of farmers between the 1940s and 1960s significantly transformed the social and economic landscape of the area. The expansion of cash crops such as rubber and pepper strengthened the rural economy. The block includes several tribal regions, including Kuttampuzha, which have a significant indigenous population. Various development initiatives have been implemented to improve education, healthcare, and housing for these tribal communities. Starting from agricultural development, the activities of the Block Panchayat have expanded to include poverty alleviation, women empowerment, and employment guarantee programs. Today, Kothamangalam Block Panchayat functions as a model institution for participatory and sustainable rural development.
